Time for Provincial Status
Malakand Division, with a population of 9.96 million and an area of 31,162 km², is larger than 100 countries in population and larger in land area. Despite its vast potential in tourism, hydropower, and agriculture, it faces poverty, underdevelopment, and chronic neglect, receiving around 8% to 10% of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s development budget. Around 52% of its population lives in poverty, 34% of children are out of school, over 57% lack proper drainage and sanitation, and thousands of crime cases are reported annually. Experts believe that granting provincial status could be a game-changer, ensuring fair representation, improved governance, and balanced development.
