Priority Issues & Challenges

  • Road infrastructure — Bajaur has 831.8 km of roads, including 568.1 km paved and 263.7 km unpaved. Poor road connectivity in mountainous areas continues to restrict access to markets and essential services.
  • Education — Bajaur's literacy rate is 26.3%, including 39.9% for males and 12.3% for females, among the lowest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The district also faces a shortage of teachers and schools.
  • Health — Healthcare is limited, with only 4 hospitals (503 beds), 2 Rural Health Centres (40 beds), and 19 Basic Health Units serving a population of 1.29 million (2023).
  • Basic services and water supply — Only 28.5% of households have access to piped drinking water, while 56.7% have electricity, reflecting significant infrastructure and service gaps.
  • Economic development and employment — Bajaur's economy depends mainly on agriculture, livestock, trade, and remittances. Limited industry and infrastructure continue to constrain employment and economic growth.
